The National Association of Town Watch awarded Richardson 1st place for the 2010 National Night Out competition, which showcases citizen participation between police departments and the communities they serve.
The national event encourages citizens to come outside for an evening to interact with their neighbors and members of the local police department to strengthen neighborhood spirit and enhance the sense of community. Community policing is a strategy and philosophy based on the notion that interaction and support among neighbors can help control crime and reduce fear, with community members helping to identify suspects and bring problems to the attention of the police.
Richardson has been recognized as one of the top National Night Out communities in the nation for the past 17 years and was awarded 1st place in 2001, 2005, and 2007 for communities in the 50,000 to 99,000 population category.
